Life, Loss, Love

I've been reminded in a dramatic, tragic way that life is so precious and can be so short. Friends of ours lost one of their 10 year-old boys after a shockingly brief diagnosis of leukemia. Without knowing how I could ever handle something like that, I've made sure to try to let my loved ones know I so very much love them. I've also realized that God does indeed love each of us, and that he's more interested in having us try each day to be the best we can and not necessarily exist in that ideal scenario. It's ok for life to be messy, I guess, both because of the learning that allows and because of the eternal promises he's made to us for just trying. My prayers and love are going out still to those Sherman Hemsleys, and a thank you as well to all of them for being such a loving, faithful family.

We love you too, Claire, Brad and Thorvald!!!!

I also had one of those life is precious weeks. I have a new client who wants to buy a tiny strip of undevelopable waterfront close to her home. She thought it was a little public park, but just learned it is owned by an individual. She wanted to make an unsolicited offer to the owner, so I asked her to consider what she might tell him about why she wanted the land.

She said her reason was simple - she had twin boys born at 21 1/2 weeks. One of them turned two years old last month, the other didn't make it. They scattered his ashes in the bay and she somehow feels closer to him when she visits this little this strip of land. She wants to leave the land to the city to use as an actual park someday.

Having a son at nearly the same age, I cannot imagine her loss. I felt honored to be chosen to help her pursue this goal. And, it reminded me just how precious life is.

Thanks for being our friends . . . our lives are so much richer for you!
